Many people have undergone harrowing experiences and attacks by stray dogs in Goa. In a recent one, a Spanish tourist was attacked by a pack of dogs, bitten on both knees, as she was taking a stroll at Rajbagh beach in Canacona. In Bhatlem Govt quarters, many stray dogs have gone on an attacking spree, where even vehicle riders have been thrown down. With local governing bodies doing nothing to curb the population of dogs and indiscriminate feeding by dog lovers, the number of dogs have increased leading to more attacks on humans. If the dogs are not sterilised then the number of dogs will increase with more casualties. Ignoring signs of aggression, protecting aggressive dogs and preventing their removal from the area can lead to a disastrous situation. The state government should make compulsory registration for owing dogs. Local bodies are responsible for the dogs and they have to control dog feeding and garbage, which is not being done. The Supreme Court order of 2001 clearly states that it is the responsibility of the civic agencies to control the population of stray dogs by spaying them.
