It is becoming increasingly clear that Goa is facing not only a shortage of water but also concerns about contamination. Recent reports”such as the health issues linked to contaminated water in a Dabolim housing project, the presence of fuel in a well at Sancoale Church, and official findings that water in Goa’s beaches, lakes and rivers contains sewage or faecal matter”highlight the seriousness of the situation and its potential impact on public health.
There is concern that, instead of focusing fully on these issues, the government continues to permit housing and real estate projects and convert green areas, forests, water bodies and hills for development. Many feel that economic interests appear to be taking priority. Residents in both villages and municipal areas may need to pay closer attention to how development is managed. This also raises a question for the Tourism Minister: how will concerns about water quality affect Goa’s image as a tourist destination?
