This is in response to a recent article on the rising number of road accidents in Goa. While some involve tourist drivers, many involve locals, pointing to a deeper systemic issue. It is good that traffic monitoring has improved with AI-enabled cameras. However, these cameras detect violations after they happen. We also need preventive measures. Have we investigated the driving licence issuance process? My household help told me that she and her ward obtained their licences through an agent without taking any online or physical tests. After speaking to others, I learned this is reportedly common practice. We also need to examine why people need agents in the first place. I obtained licences for myself and my spouse directly from the RTO years ago. The process involved multiple visits. Today, the inconvenience has moved online, with a slow, unreliable portal. However, the mandatory video and online test for my ward was encouraging. A streamlined, citizen-friendly licensing process, combined with AI enforcement, could improve road safety.
