Residents of Navelim have reportedly voiced strong opposition to the proposed demolition of a nearly 200-year-old Portuguese-era cross near the Jackniband Bridge, in order to facilitate road expansion, urging the Public Works Department to consider relocating the historic structure. Residents recognize that better roads and safer traffic movement are essential for the growth and convenience of the community. Their concern is that development should not come at the cost of a landmark that carries deep religious, cultural and historical significance for generations of people. The old cross has long been regarded by local residents as a spiritual protector of travellers. For generations, sailors have traditionally paid their respects at the cross before embarking on their voyages and again upon their return. The cross is closely intertwined with the faith, memories and traditions of Navelim and several neighbouring villages. At the same time, the importance of road expansion cannot be ignored. Development and heritage conservation can go hand-in-hand. A possible solution would be to carefully relocate the cross to a suitable and convenient site nearby, in consultation with the local community and church authorities. It is pertinent to note that a chapel at Fatorda was reportedly relocated to make way for road expansion.
