The recent detection of dengue cases in Porvorim calls for immediate preventive measures to contain the spread of this mosquito-borne viral disease. With heavy rainfall creating ideal breeding conditions, the risk of a wider outbreak has increased significantly. Stagnant water collected at construction sites, discarded tyres, flower pots, and uncovered water storage containers provides perfect breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary carrier of dengue. The Health Department must intensify surveillance, undertake regular source reduction drives, carry out anti-larval treatment, and strengthen public awareness campaigns in vulnerable areas. Fogging operations should also be conducted promptly wherever dengue cases are reported. At the same time, the Urban Development Department, municipal corporations, and local self-government bodies must work in close coordination to ensure effective vector control and sanitation measures. Citizens also have an important role to play by eliminating stagnant water around their homes and maintaining clean surroundings. They should avoid self-medication and seek timely medical advice if they develop symptoms of viral fever. Collective action is essential to prevent dengue from becoming a larger public health threat in Goa.
