When elections approach, some Marathi language supporters try to pressure elected representatives to grant Marathi equal status. However, the language issue has long been settled. Will the Government also assure equal status for the Konkani script? And will Maharashtra provide job reservations for Goans if Marathi is granted such status? Instead of focusing on quality education and better opportunities for our children, we seem to be looking backwards. Government jobs are already subject to reservation, while temporary jobs are announced regularly. What about educated youth seeking permanent employment and a secure future? The Government must focus on creating better opportunities for local, qualified youth rather than leaving them dependent on casual work.
