Even though Mumbai lakes received 96% of water as on Oct1, there was no rainfall thereafter. Hence by Oct 8 the lake levels had dropped to 94.24% , while last year, on the same day, it was 99.02% . Secondly, this year, very intense heat is predicted due to El Nino which will lead to faster than normal evaporation. Finally and most significantly, Mumbai receives half its water from Bhatsa dam (48%). In normal times, around March when lake levels in Mumbai dip dangerously low, BMC requisitions extra water from Bhatsa's reserves. (which are also reserved for agriculture in surrounding areas). This year, the reserves will be completely depleted by March as farmers in parched areas will demand more water and their pleas cannot be ignored. Already , many places in Maharashtra are receiving tanker water. So no reserves this year. Hence Mumbaikars must be prepared for severe water cuts in coming months as the existing water in lakes will not last till July.
