Stating that regional cinema is making huge strides in terms of development, Jury of the Indian Panorama section of IFFI 2018 predicted that short film are set to become a bigger phenomenon in the future. The jury comprised of Jury Chairman, Feature Film, Rahul Rawail, Jury Chairman, non-Feature Film, Vinod Ganatra and jury members major Ravi, KG Suresh, Suneel Puranic, and Parvati Menon, and was interacting with the media in a press conference held at the old GMC building in Panaji.
Chairman of the jury for feature film, Rahul Rawail observed that Indian regional cinema is making huge strides in terms of development. “Right from Indian Panorama last year to National Awards this year, the growth of regional films has been fantastic” said the chairman. “The way cinema in India is growing, it won’t be long before the term regional cinema becomes irrelevant and everything is referred to as cinema in India” said Rawail
Chairman of the non-feature film section Vinod Ganatra stated that short films are set to play a bigger role in times to come. “Due to digitisation of filmmaking, many new filmmakers have arisen, who have a different way of storytelling.” said Ganatra “A day will come when short films will dominate the space in Indian Panorama and Indian cinema.” Ganatra further stated that good content cannot be the only criterion to judge a good short film. “In non-feature films, you sometimes have good content but bad quality of filmmaking. But if you select the film only because of its content, you are doing injustice to other films that also have good quality.” he said.
Jury member major Ravi averred that trends in filmmaking have been changing over the years, and this year there were a total of 18 films revolving around the issues of transgenders, while jury member Suneel Puranic voiced concern that this year there were less entries from southern Indian regions which generally dominate the feature film section. Jury member Parvati Menon praised the emotional content in short films.
