Here's an interesting event playing out in the state capital today.

The Fundacao Oriente a cultural institute located in the beautiful Fontainhas area, also known as the Latin quarter of Panaji is on Tuesday hosting a presentation on the ‘Theatines in Goa- epitome of the Rome of the East’ by Monica Esteves Reis (Phd).

The Theatines or the Congregation of Clerics Regular of the Divine Providence are a religious order of the Catholic Church. The order was founded by Saint Cajetan (Gaetano dei Conti di Tiene), Paolo Consiglieri, Bonifacio da Colle, and Giovanni Pietro Carafa (afterwards Pope Paul IV). The Theatines were the first to found papal missions in foreign lands.

The Church of St. Cajetan as it is popularly known, (originally called The Church of Our Lady of Divine Providence) and the Convent of St. Cajetan were built by Italian friars of the Order of Theatines, (known in Portuguese as Clérigos Regulares da Divina Providência). Although the church altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Divine Providence, the church is named after the founder of the Theatine order, St. Cajetan, a contemporary of St Francis Xavier.

The presentation will be held at six pm today and those interested in the histories of Goa as well as the Roman Catholic Church should try and attend this educative event.
