High Command yet to take call on Goa leadership issue

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | 24th January, 10:44 pm

Post Zilla Panchayat election results, Congress leaders were expecting some movement from the party High Command to take a call, if any, on the leadership issue facing the state Congress. If sources are to be believed, there was speculation within Congress circles that the High Command would discuss Goa affairs about a week ago. It was even believed that the Leader of the Opposition might be invited for these deliberations, but the intervening Assembly session prevented him from travelling to Delhi. Local Congress leaders are now anxiously waiting for the High Command to take up Goa matters next week. Wait and watch.

Buzz in political circles over
Vijai's plan to become CM

Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai’s statement that he would do away with uniforms for college students if he becomes the state’s Chief Minister has made for interesting reading. His remark quickly became a subject of debate in political circles, with observers questioning how Vijaibab plans to become CM when the Goa Forward Party has yet to establish firm roots across the state. Sources further point out that his efforts to bring opposition forces together have not borne fruit so far, nor has his much-talked-about ghar vapsi into the Congress materialised. Or, is something quietly brewing in political circles? Wait and watch.

Can Cong win key hinterland
seats to form next govt?

It was a week when Leader of the Opposition Yuribab Alemao received blessings from well-wishers in Cuncolim, praying for his elevation as the state’s Chief Minister after the 2027 Assembly elections.

The Opposition leader,  however, faced a host of critical questions on social media about whether the Congress is realistically in a position to secure the magic figure of 21 seats in the next election. While a Congress surge appears evident in traditional strongholds such as Saxtti, the bigger question remains: Is the party confident of winning crucial seats from the hinterland talukas to cobble together the bare minimum required to form the government? Many questions remain unanswered.

Former Nuvem MLA has set his
sights on 2027 Assembly polls

Former Nuvem MLA Wilfred D'Sa, popularly known as Babashan, appeared to have taken the defeat of his candidates in Nuvem and Colva in the recently held Zilla Panchayat polls in his stride. The former Congress MLA had extended full support to Nellybai Rodrigues, who lost in Colva by a whisker, and to Luisbab Barretto in Nuvem. While several political observers were quick to term these defeats as a setback to Babashan’s comeback plans, the former MLA seems to be preparing in right earnest for a return to electoral politics in the 2027 Assembly elections. Wait and watch.

After recent promotions, now 3
Goa Police SPs from Cuncolim

Recent promotions within the Goa Police have added to the list of Superintendents of Police hailing from Cuncolim. With the elevation of DySP Rajendra Prabhudessai to the rank of SP, there are now three SPs in the Goa Police from Cuncolim, including North Goa SP Harish Madkaikar and SP Santosh Desai. In the recent past, two senior police officers from the same village—SP Tony Fernandes and SP Sammy Tavares—retired after serving as Superintendents of Police. Indeed, a unique distinction for the historic village, which has contributed significantly to the Goa Police over the years. Any questions?
