Cumborda Sports Club emerged as the champions of the 1st Caniza Peixoto Memorial Football Tournament, defeating Damdolem Sports Club 3-1 in the final held on Sunday at the St Alex Church ground.
The tournament, organised by Agxem Sports Club, drew a crowd of 800 enthusiastic fans, who braved heavy rains to witness the exciting final.
The match began with both teams showing promise despite the adverse weather. Cumborda SC took an early lead with a goal from Macson Fernandes. Damdolem SC equalised before halftime with a goal from Milroy Hilario, bringing the score to 1-1 at the break.
In the second half, Damdolem SC struggled to capitalise on their chances, and Cumborda SC secured their victory with two quick goals. James Fernandes and Balsan Fernandes scored for Cumborda SC, sealing the win and the tournament title.
The prize distribution ceremony was graced by Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, MLA of Curtorim and GIDC Chairman, who was the chief guest. The event was also attended by Michelle Rebello, ZP Curtorim; Fr Manuel Dias, Fr Milagres Dias, Fr Michael Fernandes; Conceicao Dias; Tyson Caido; Jasmila Ferrao, Panch Member; and other dignitaries. The family of the late Caniza Peixoto, including Cony Peixoto, and club officials were also present.
Before the awards, a cake was cut to celebrate Pastor Day, honouring the priests for their service to the community.
