Calangute hold Guardian Angel

Meldon D’Silva’s powerful header in the 76th minute helped Calangute Association come back from behind to hold Guardian Angel Sports Club to a 1-1 draw in a round seven match of Goa Professional League, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Monday.

The first fifteen minutes was a see-saw battle as both teams enjoyed almost equal possession of the ball. In the 22nd minute, Gaurdian Angel’s Rogef Colaco attempted a long shot which did not trouble Melroy Fernandes, the rival keeper. Five minutes later, Yogesh Kadam's header off a cross from Felix Odili went over the Guardian Angel goalpost. In the 34th minute, Guardian Angel made another foray as Gammy Costa made a brilliant cross to Harold Fernandes, who ran a long way with the ball but failed to keep his shot on target.

Guardian Angel’s Costa Rican player Djourou Isaac Ouedji played a very crucial role in the match as he made a series of vital clearances. On the other hand, Calangute had to make an early substitution as Sachin Gawas was brought on in place of Latesh Mandrekar. Post resumption, Guardian Angel made their first substitution by replacing Brian Faria with Melvito Fernandes.

The first goal of the match was scored in the 51st minute as Guardian Angel took the lead through a penalty conversion by Anthony Pereira after Calangute Association captain George D’Souza handled the ball in the box and referee Mario Pereira pointed to the spot.

Calangute Association suffered a blow as first half substitute Sachin was injured and had to be replaced with Blake Haldankar in the 67th minute. Despite their problems, Calangute found the equaliser in the 76th minute as Felix made a well-timed cross to Meldon D’Silva, who headed in the leveller.
