Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda prevailed over Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club 3-2 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions of Late Joao Francisco Pacheco Memorial Trophy inter village football tournament organised by Betalbatim Sporting Club at Betalbatim Sports Complex on Sunday.
Heavy rains throughout the day made the life miserable for players as both the teams struggled to display positional play. Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club adjusted to the wet conditions better and had a chance but David Colaco's rasping shot was well blocked by the rival goalkeeper.
At the other end, Don Bosco Oratory did not lag behind as they came close when lanky striker Necil Pinto picked up the ball from Francis Andrade but the former's snap shot was comfortably collected by Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club goalkeeper Joseph Monteiro, in the 12th minute.
Post resumption, both the teams adopted a safety-first approach. As a result there were few trills at either end. Sao Jose de Areal had a golden chance to seal the rivals' fate but substitute Alvito Moura blasted wide from close range after Rayman Fernandes laid him on a platter.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda netted through Francis Andrade, Cayven Araujo and Necel Pinto, while Aggio Antao and Fredak Andro scored for Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club. Don Bosco Oratory were richer by Rs 40,000 and the winners trophy while Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club had to settle for a cash purse of Rs 30,000. Adv Radharao Gracias was the chief guest and gave away the prizes, in the presence of Nelly Rodrigues, ZP Member, Viola Pacheco, and other dignitaries. Jose Pereira, president of the club, welcomed the guests.
