A second half strike by Joel Colaco helped Dicarpale Sports Club edge past Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao 1-0 to emerge champions of All Goa Our Lady of Assumpta Trophy inter village football tournament organized by Sarzora Sports Club in an pulsating final at SAG ground, Sarzora on Sunday.
Dicarpale dominated initially as their forwards showed urgency in their approach and unleashed a couple of shots against the rival goal. At the other end, Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao also launched a flurry of attacks but Dicarpale goalkeeper Sachin Ashtekar was rock solid under the bar and kept the slate clean till the half time.
Post resumption, Dicarpale were the more dominant side with their forwards making all the moves but the goal remained elusive. After persistent forays, the match winner finally came in the 51st minute through Joel Colaco. A flag kick taken by Agnelo Colaco dipped into the rival penalty area and Joel made no mistake in finding the net.
Stung by the setback, Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao went all out in search of equalizer but Sachin Ashtekar under the Dicarpale bar showed fine reflexes and anticipation to protect the slender lead.
Dicarpale had few chances to increase their tally but their forwards were wayward.
Dicarpale were richer by Rs 30,000 and a glittering trophy while Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao had to settle for Rs 20,000. The following individual prizes were awarded: Man of the match - Joel Colaco of Dicarpale Sports Club, Best defender of the final - Kerishnath Shirodkar of Clube Sao Miguel de Taliegao, Best disciplined team - Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club, Best goalkeeper of the final - Sachin Ashtekar of Dicarpale Sports Club, Best striker of the final - Abhay Shetty of Dicarpale Sports Club. In all 16 teams participated in the tournament.
Anthony Babush Rodrigues, proprietor of Jolly Travels and former Zilla Panchayat Parishad member of Velim Constituency, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Edwin Cardozo, Zilla Panchayat Parishad member, Navelim Constituency. John Dias welcomed the guests and Altino Furtado, president of Sarzora Sports Club proposed a vote of thanks. The function was compered by Carlos Fernandes.
