Dramapur SC beat Cuncolim Union 5-4 via the tiebreaker to enter the quarterfinals of the Mandopa Cup inter-village football tournament at Mandopa ground, Navelim on Monday.
Cuncolim scored the first goal in the 8th minute through Wilson Fernandes. Cuncolim extended their lead in the 29th minute through Rosario Carvalho. In the second half, Dramapur scored two quick goals through Piedade Rebello and Nigel Fernandes in the 44th and 55th minutes, respectively, to go level, 2-2.
In the tiebreaker, Dramapur SC scored through Nash Fernandes, Piedade Rebello and Nigel Fernandes. Wilson Fernandes and Jollyton Fernandes scored for Cuncolim Union.
Papaya Castleward win inter-ward tourney
Papaya Castleward Nagoa Verna edged past Banana Castelward United 1-0 in the finals of the Nagoa Verna Castle United inter-ward football tournament organised by Nagoa Verna Salcete Castle United at Castle ward on Sunday.
Papaya Castleward netted the match-winner through Clive Fernandes. The prize for the highest scorer of the tournament was awarded to Clive Fernandes from Papaya Castleward. Fr Franky Fernandes was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up, along with other dignitaries.
DBO Fatorda enter quarterfinals
Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda beat Parish Youth Nuvem, Fatorda 2-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the 16th Super Soccer tournament organised by United Club of Benaulim at St John the Baptist Dando ground, Benaulim on Monday.
Elroy Barreto scored the first goal in the eighth minute. Despite Nuvem's efforts, they missed opportunities to equalise in the first half. The second half saw Fatorda maintaining dominance, while Nuvem continued their struggle to level the score.
They were handed a golden opportunity to level the match through a penalty conceded by Fatorda's goalkeeper but Nuvem's spot kick was struck wide. Fatorda sealed their victory with a second goal, securing a 2-0 triumph.
Earlier, chief guest PI Theron D’Costa declared the tournament open. Alfred Noronha of Don Bosco Fatorda was presented the Man of the Match prize by Manoj Kesarkar, panch of Cana Benaulim.
Manovikas HS, Fatima Convent advance
Manovikas HS and Fatima Convent HS Margao cruised ahead in the U-17 Subroto Mukherjee girls Salcete Taluka football tournament played at Ambelim football ground.
In the first match, Manovikas HS defeated St Xavier’s HS of Velim 5-0. Shania Carvalho scored four and Linday Rodrigues added one. In the second match, a goal each by Zuriel Tavares and Ivanka Barreto helped Fatima Convent School to beat Perpetual Succour Convent HS of Navelim 2-0.
Meanwhile, Perpetual Succour Convent HS Navelim, Govt Multipurpose Borda and St Alex HSS Curtorim entered the second round of the U-17 Boys Salcete Taluka Subroto Mukherjee Football tournament played at School playground, Cuncolim. Perpetual Succour defeated Bethany Convent 6-5 via the tie-breaker after the match ended in 1-1 draw.
Govt Multipurpose HSS Borda defeated OL of Rosary HS of Fatorda 2-0. Jurico Correia and Ibrahim Jagirdar were the scorers. St Alex HSS of Curtorim defeated Manovikas EMS 5-0. Nevil Mascarenhas scored a brace while Elton Mascarenhas, Alynier Fernandes and Ivan Hilario added a goal each to the team’s tally of five.
