Forca Goa Foundation launched its inaugural Little Gaurs League recently at Kings School in south Goa. The league was officially kicked off by Goan football legend, Arjuna awardee Brahmanand Sankhwalkar in the presence of chief guest Melwin Pereira, chairman of Kings School, and Derrick Pereira, technical director of FC Goa.
The opening day saw over a hundred fans turn up to support the little stars on the field. The league is conducted in an open format wherein any individual, club, school or community can come in and register to participate in the league. This first of its kind initiative saw a great response with nine teams participating in the under-10 category and six teams participating in the under-8 category.
The league kicked off with Kings School taking on Child Care in the U-10 category, followed by Kings School vs YFA in the U-8 category. The matches were played at a high tempo with lots of enthusiasm and skill displayed by the young players.
Sankhwalkar, the former Indian national team captain, said, “I’m very happy to see initiatives like these and I congratulate Forca Goa Foundation for putting together this league. This is the foundation to creating a strong football ecosystem and with more leagues like these, we can hope to see a lot of good players develop from Goa.” Derrick Pereira added, “It’s great to see parents come out and support their children at this age. With the right kind of support and opportunities, our children can go a long way in their football careers”
The Little Gaurs League will run till March with matches being played every Saturday. By conducting the league, the foundation hopes that young children will get the opportunity to play football regularly in a professional environment and develop as better footballers.
