Former referee Braz Rodrigues passes away

Braz Rodrigues, the former national football referee, passed away after a prolonged illness on Friday evening. He was 49 and is survived by his wife and two daughters. His sudden death has plunged the Goan soccer and refereeing fraternity into mourning.

At the domestic level, Rodrigues played for Varca Sports Club and Goa Unveristy. Goa Football Association president Elvis Gomes and former Dempo and national coach Armando Colaco were among the prominent figures who conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family. “It is sad to hear that Braz Rodrigues is no more. His contribution to Goan and national refereeing will never be forgotten. I Share in grief of his family,” Colaco said.
Maurico Afonso, head coach of Dempo Sports Club said the passing away of Rodrigues was “a great loss to the refereeing fraternity”. Joe Dias, president of Salcete Football Club; Jose Manuel Silva, former football referee, and Alex Dias, former coach of Curtorim Gymkhana also condoled the death of Rodrigues.

Young Goan chess wizard WIM Ivana Maria Furtado claimed a gold medal in Asian Junior Chess Championship in girls category, at Shiraz, Iran on Wednesday.

Seeded second in the tournament, she remained undefeated, winning 5 games and drawing 4 matches to secure her second gold at the Asian meet, where she had won in 2013.
