The Goa Under 18 squad preparing for Junior National Football Championships for Dr BC Roy Trophy lost 5-2 against India Under 16 team at SAG Holy Trinity Grounds, Benaulim on Tuesday.
In an evently contested match the Indian colts broke the deadlock when Ridge D’Mello slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. However their joy was shortlived when Boris D’Mello neutrualized the lead in the 10th minute off a well-measured pass from Stanley Fernandes. Both the teams adopted aggressive approach and Bekey Oram reagained the lead. The half time score read 1-0.
Post resumption, Indian colts took control of the match and their forwards found their rhythm and the Goan team conceded a free kick on the left flank in the 51st minute when Harpreet Singh capitalised on rival defender’s lapse and punted the ball to the far corner of the net off Gibson Singh cross to inflate their tally. The 3-1 cushion helped Indian colts to mount pressure on the rival citadel.
The Men in Blue did not wait for long to get their fourth goal when Adarash Rai Das jumped high and nodded home off Rohit Danu in the 66th minute. Goa won a free-kick just 20 yards away from the rival goal as Savlon Cardozo’s free-kick brushed past the Indian colts’ goalkeeper and Arraen Alvares who was lurking nearby gently tapped home the rebound.
Any chance of a fightback was short-lived as Indian colts drilled the final into rival’s coffin when Sailo got on the end of some brilliant work by Rohit Gusain, who managed to extinguish an attempted clearance by the Goa team keeper and also held off the central defenders as the ball fell kindly to Sailo who drove home the ball to make it 5-2.
