Goan Football Club managed to register a convincing 1-0 win over Sporting Clube de Goa in the GFA Vedanta Women’s League, organised by GFA, at Duler grounds, here on Monday.
The first session saw Goan FC eves dominate where they attacked the rival citadel time and again but their strikers, Namita and Alisha, failed to score from openings created by international Velaine Fernandes. In the 18th minute, Goan FC’s Joyvi Fernandes failed to beat Sporting keeper Ashika Gadekar in a one-to-one situation.
Sporting had just one good chance to take the lead when, in the 22nd minute, Stessi Cardozo’s free kick was saved by Goan FC keeper Josline D’Souza. After much probing, finally in the 25th minute, Goan FC eves took the lead when Alisha Tavares -- collecting a pass from Jeromina Colaco -- scored with a neat placement, 1-0. Just five minutes later, Goan FC’s Alisha should have further extended the lead but she shot wide from close with just the rival keeper to beat.
On crossing ends, Goan FC dominated while their opponents shone in patches. Sporting had a chance to net the equaliser in the 53rd minute as a 30-yard free kick by Stessi Cardozo was not collected cleanly by keeper Josline but striker Elida failed the tap the ball into the goal. Goan FC’s Velaine Fernandes was deservedly named as the player of the match.
