MARGAO
Cuncolim Union rallied from behind to oust Carmona SC 2-1 to enter the quarterfinals of the Jaju Memorial Trophy Football Tournament organised by Young Strikers Benaulim at St John Baptist Dando ground, Benaulim on Monday.
After a barren first half of missed chances by both the teams, Carmona picked up the pace and surged ahead in the 42nd minute when striker Maven Gracias unleashed a right-footer from just outside the box to beat Krishekesh Gaonkar in the Cuncolim goal.
Stunned by the sudden strike, Cuncolim got their acts together and got the equaliser through the boots of defender Jolliston D' Sousa who poked in a low cross off Mithun Carvalho. Carmona were rattled by the equaliser and rival striker Daulat Dessai got past the tired Carmona defenders to get the winner five minutes before the final whistle.
Earlier, chief guest Clifford Miranda, former footballer and coach, and Antonieta Goes, wife of late Jaju Fernndes, released the fixtures of the tournament and unveiled a poster of Jaju in the presence of Roseferns, Anthony Mam, Andrew Ferrrao, Xavier Pereira and others.
