Joel Fernandes struck a brace to power United Club of Benaulim to a fluent 4-2 win against CAC Cansaulim and romp in to the quarter-finals of 29th Super Soccer tournament organised by United Boys of Dando Colva at St John the Baptist ground, Dando Benaulim on Tuesday.
CAC, Cansaulim dominated the game in the initial period of the game and had a chance in the 3rd minute when Aaron Fernandes sped past the rival defender and his snap shot was well blocked by rival goalkeeper Hubert Rodrigues. At the other end, United Club of Benaulim took time to settle down and later attacked through Laxmikant Kurade and Velesly Afonso.
CAC, Cansaulim striker Veran Ferrao then failed to beat the rival goalkeeper in a one-to-one situation. Joel Fernandes broke the deadlock in the 16th minute while Nicholas Rodrigues doubled the lead in the 20th minute.
Down 0-2, CAC, Cansaulim intensified their attacks and Ashley Soares reduced the deficit in the 27th minute. Joel Fernandes struck a second time to register his brace. Two minutes later, substitute Aliskey Barbosa reduced the deficit.
Post resumption, United Club of Benaulim continued in same vein with their forwards showing the urgency and made a couple of moves against the rival citadel but their forwards misfired from close range. Nicholas Rodrigues fired the last nail into rival coffin in the
65th minute.
