Lawyer's Challengers claimed a hat-trick of Advocates Cricket League T20 titles as they got the better of Hurricanes by 17 runs in the thrilling finals played at GCA ground in Porvorim on Sunday evening.
Justice Mahesh S Sonak graced the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest. Justice BP Deshpande was the Guest of Honour along with Principle District Judge South Goa Irshad Agha. On the occasion senior advocate Saresh Lotlikar, one of the organisers was felicitated.
Lawyer's Challengers won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain Dattaprasad Shirodkar and Sachin Sardessai put on 30 runs for the opening wicket before the former departed for 19, with team's score reading 30 for 1. In the next two balls, they lost the wickets of Sardessai (8) and Abhay Vengurlekar (golden duck) to find themselves in some spot of bother.
However, Achit Shigwan and Shantaram Naik (15) resurrected their innings with a 37-run partnership. Shigwan then stitched a 67-run partnership with Sanjay Parab, but was unfortunate to miss his fifty by just three runs. Sanjay Parab then in the company of Mithun Govekar added 40 runs for the sixth wicket to help Lawyer's Challengers post a challenging 176 for 6 in 20 overs. Sanjay scored a quickfire 26-ball 46 while Mithun smashed an unbeaten 21 off 11 balls.
Pravin Gauns and Viraj Tar took two wickets each for Hurricanes; Rohan Shirodkar and Dishan Naik contributed with a scalp each.
Hurricanes' reply started on a rather dismal note as they lost opener Devanand Korgaonkar (6) in the second over with only 10 runs on the board. However, it hardly had any effect on the two in-form batters -- Vitthalraj Sangodkar and Viraj Tar -- as the duo began hitting the opposition bowlers to all parts of the ground.
Vitthalraj was more aggressive and completed his fifty in quick time. As long as the two were at the crease, the 177-run target looked within their reach. However, with another 55 runs needed in last 5 overs, Vitthalraj was dismissed for a well-made 69 off 50 balls. He along with Viraj Tar put on 112 runs for the second wicket.
Soon, Viraj too departed for 44 with the team still needing another 49 runs. The onus now was on the next batters to maintain the tempo, but they somehow failed to do it against a disciplined Lawyer's Challengers bowling attack. At the end of 20 overs, they could only manage to score 159 for 4, and lost the finals by 17 runs.
