Maina SC win Super Soccer title

Maina Sports Club registered a fluent 5-2 win over Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda to win the 14th Super Soccer 2018 tournament in a one-sided final at St John the Baptist Ground, Dando-Benaulim on Sunday.  

Maina Sports Club looked good in possession and dominated their opponents. Maina Sports Club took an early lead when James Fernandes slotted home, giving no chance to the rival goalkeeper. At the other end, Don Bosco Oratory had a chance when midfielder Francis Andrade’s left footed drive hit the crossbar, much to the dismay of Fatorda supporters. James Fernandes scored again in the 20th minute. Savio Fernandes, who was rock solid in the defence, added his name to the scoresheet in the 23rd minute. Clive Colaco inflated the tally before half time.  

Post resumption, Don Bosco Oratory were a transformed side and created many openings and their efforts bore the fruit when Ashely Araujo reduced the margin. The reducer enlivened Don Bosco Oratory and they launched a barrage of attacks. Roque Borges further reduced the deficit in the 40th minute. Jovan Dias, the attacking midfielder, put the match beyond doubt with the fifth goal, sending the Maina supporters into raptures, in the dying minutes of the game.  

Maina Sports Club were richer by Rs 40,000 and a trophy while Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda had to settle for Rs 30,000 and a trophy. Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Colva Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes, Benaulim Sarpanch Diella Pereira, Menin De Bandar, Deputy Sarpanch of VP Benaulim, and Anthony Pango, GFA Executive Committee member.
