Parish Youth, Nuvem registered a fluent 2-0 win over Sporting Club of Davorlim to win the Late Assis Afonso Memorial inter village football tournament, organised by Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club of Paroda, at Avedem Panchayat ground, on Sunday. Parish Youth led 1-0 at half time.
The Nuvem side were a superior lot and dominated the proceedings from the start. They broke the deadlock in the very 3rd minute when Albino Pereira unleashed a snap shot into the net. Sporting Club of Davorlim looked out of sorts as a team and failed to combine as a unit.
Parish Youth had a couple of scoring chances but their forwards wasted from close. The Davorlim side too had their share of chances but their forwards did not make the most of the chances that came their way.
After the break, Parish Youth showed more urgency while going forward and in the 45th minute, Rohit Fernandes’ blistering shot found the nylons. Down 0-2, Sporting Club of Davorlim regrouped and threw more bodies upfront but could not breach the rivals’ compact defence.Parish Youth were awarded a winners’ prize of Rs 40,000 and the trophy, while Sporting Club of Davorlim had to settle for Rs 30,000 and the runners-up trophy.
Cuncolim MLA Clafasio Dias was the chief guest and gave away the prizes, in the presence of guests of honour Rev Fr Agnelo Rodrigues, Parish Priest of Paroda Church, Rev Fr Ave Maria Alfonso, Parish Priest of Majorda, and special invitees, Hazel Fernandes, ZP Xeldem, Alleulia Afonso, Sarpanch of VP Avedem and other panchas of the village.
Individual prizes: First scorer of the final - Albino Pereira of Parish Youth, Best player of the tournament - Albino Pereira of Parish Youth, Best defender of the final - Jordil Gomes of Sporting Club of Davorlim, Best goalkeeper of the final - Shawn Rodrigues of Parish Youth.
