Salgaocar FC registered a tough 2-1 win over SCC Cavelossim to confirm their spot in the knock-out stages of the Goa Sevens Premier League, organised by Goa Sevens and Ambelim Sports Club in association with Goa Football Association (GFA) at Ambelim Sports Complex, on Tuesday.
Agnelo Colaco and Gilbert Oliveira scored for the green brigade while Samson Simoes reduced the margin for the opponents. The Cavelossim side, having lost their previous game to FC Bardez, made just one change to their starting sevens as Nevile Fernandes was brought in. On the other hand, Salgaocar named an unchanged squad that won the previous tie against FC Bardez 1-0.
The initial minutes saw the Cavelossim side attack with raging charges with Bersal Veigas and Samson Fernandes trying their shots from far. The first attempt for the Salgaocar side came from Agnelo Colaco as his powerful shot off a free kick was tapped away by the Cavelossim keeper Razak Deasor. But he made no mistake to score from the resulting corner as Agnelo’s curling shot landed into the nets off a clearance by the Cavelossim back line, 1-0.
The Cavelossim team were still giving a tough fight to the Greens with better runs down the flanks. The skipper of the green side doubled the team’s lead in the 22nd minute as Gilbert Oliveira landed his shot into the net which was in no reach of the Cavelossim keeper.
On the other hand, the beach side boys had the best attempt to reduce the margin as Bersal Veigas lobbed the ball inside to Michel Silva who shot high on an open target. In another close attempt, Samson Fernandes shot inches away from the target as Salgaocar went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
On changing sides, Gilbert had a chance to extend the side’s lead as he shot Agnelo’s well placed pass on target but a diving save by the keeper denied them the goal. The second half saw the Cavelossim side come out with better passing and shots. Bersal Veigas played a key role in the Cavelossim side with numerous attempts. The best one being off a free kick from outside the box which was tapped away by the Salgaocar custodian Jason D’Mello in the 46th minute.
The second half witnessed end to end shots from the beach side who had much of the crowd’s support but their attempts failed to land into the post. The Cavelossim side managed to net a goal after much probing as Samson Simoes proved to be the super sub, tapping in from close range, 1-2.
The final minutes saw the SCC side fight hard but Salgaocar stood strong to win their second game.
