Striking the right chord

Konkani Musical shows have a dedicated audience and they enjoy mass appeal among the tiatr lovers. The popularity is more because the audience gets to enjoy a good number of songs from their favourite singers in addition to a fair amount of short skits which are generally packed with side splitting laughter

Striking the right chord

Konkani musical shows were introduced tothe lovers of the Konkani stage by Goa’s ‘Melody King’, the late Alfred Rose inthe year 1979. His experimentation with this new form of stage entertainmentfound instant success and acceptability across the Konkani speaking world.Alfred Rose had the distinction of staging his Konkani musical show ‘LondonchoMog’ in London. While Rose was the pioneer in introducing something new in thisformat, many others have followed in his footsteps and popularised this form ofstage presentation over the years.

In time, the Konkani stage has seen many such shows being organised by manyartists and they are always in demand. These thrive in Goa during the summerseason or during Carnival. These shows are popular among Konkani music lovers, and attract a lot of people because they are comparatively short in duration, and offer a bonanza of songs and skits. The musical shows are hassle free ascompared to a full-fledged tiatr and are also economical for the director toproduce, as a single keyboard player can provide the score. With the exception ofa few, not all musical shows, especially those staged during the Carnival andsummer season have the full complement of the brass band. Most of them conductthem with the help of a keyboardist.

The Tiatr Academy of Goa on its part encourages musical shows dedicated inmemory of departed artists. It supports individuals or institutions financiallyin this respect with a few pre-conditions. Financial support is given forstaging three such shows of each artist and three such programmes in one year.Mil-Mel-Nel, a popular trio based in Panjim, have staged two such musical showsin memory of late C Alvares and late Bab Peter. Bab Andrew staged a tribute to MBoyer, Anil Kumar in memory of late Robin Vaz in memory of Chris Perry, V Events, and Mumbai in memory of late Frank Fernand and Aniceto Lourenco in memory oflate Alfred Rose. All shows received good response from the tiatr lovers.
