Salgaocar FC managed a hard-fought 1-0 win over FC Bardez in Match 6 of the Goa Sevens Premier League, organised by Goa Sevens and Ambelim Sports Club in association with Goa Football Association (GFA), at Ambelim Sports Complex, on Sunday.
The Bardez side playing their second game in the league began with their skipper Jessel Carneiro leading the team along with Clinton Niassso and Inacio Colaco in their team. On the other hand, the green brigade, playing their first game in this league, started with Gilbert Oliveira as the captain.
Clinton Niasso was quick to receive the ball upfront from midfield and moved inside the box in the 3rd minute, but the Salgaocar keeper was quick to clear the danger. On the other hand, Leny Pereira of Salgaocar placed his light header inches away from post.
Clinton Niasso in another attempt almost scored for the Bardez side but his strong right-footer hit the top bar, missing out closely. But the green brigade finally managed to surge ahead as Samuel Costa’s perfect right cross was tapped into the post by Umesh Harijan in the 10th minute.
Jessel Carneiro came close to making it all square but his curling left-footer missed the target from close. Both sides, in the final minutes of the first half, kept striking but the keepers of either sides denied more goals as Salgaocar went into the half with a
slender 1-0 lead.
Upon resumption, the Mapusa side looked stronger upfront as Clinton along with Ronil Azavedo looked dangerous going ahead. A mistake by Neville Albuquerque of Bardez at deep almost handed Salgaocar another goal but Umesh failed to place his short on target.
The Greens were consistent in their game throughout as Umesh came close to scoring yet again in the second half but he missed a close tap-in off a free kick. At the other end, Salgaocar custodian Jason D’Mello stood strong guarding his post.
The final additional time witnessed much uproar after the Bardez side thought they were denied a penalty for an apparent hand-ball, which caused much fury in the team dugout and the crowd got involved as well. But nothing changed the score as the first half goal sealed the deal for the green
brigade.
