MARGAO: United Club of Verna entered the final of the 45th Gold Silver Rolling Trophy Football Tournament, organised by Navelim Sporting Club, after defeating CAC Cansaulim 3-1 in the semifinal at Rosary Church ground, Navelim, on Friday.
In a fast-paced and attacking contest played before a large crowd, Verna took the lead in the 17th minute through Roydon Rego. Cansaulim fought back and equalised in the 28th minute through Dominic Soares, who finished clinically to make it 1-1 at half-time.
After the changeover, Cansaulim intensified their attack but failed to break the deadlock. Verna then struck on the counter, with Beneston Barreto making no mistake in the 55th minute to restore their lead.
Cansaulim had an opportunity to level soon after, but their forwards failed to capitalise. Verna goalkeeper then launched a long pass to Beneston, who found Shelton Pereira. Pereira controlled the ball before unleashing a powerful volley from inside the box in the 57th minute to make it 3-1 and seal Verna's place in the final.
Shelton Pereira of United Club Verna was named Player of the Match and received the award from Freddy Fernandes.
The second semifinal will be played between Sao Jose de Areal and Fr Agnelo YSC Paroda on Monday, September 28.
