8th All-Goa Tribal Sports Fest: Quepem, Canacona emerge top performers

Quepem emerged as the most successful taluka contingent, with three titles and a runners-up finish at the two-day 8th State-level Tribal Sports Festival organised by Sports Authority of Goa at Ponda Sports Complex and Shiroda-Karai ground.
Quepem won the men's kabaddi title, men's and women's kho-kho championships; and finished runners-up in the men's volleyball event to powerhouse and seven-time champions Tiswadi.
Canacona also produced an impressive display winning the women's volleyball crown and upsetting favourites Tiswadi in the tug-of-war final. Bicholim emerged as the champions in Lagori and women's tennis ball cricket competitions.
WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar was the chief guest, Sports Minister Govind Gaude was the guest of honour, Cortalim MLA Anthony Vaz was a special invitee, while ZP Member Narayran Kamat, ZP Member Priya Chari were also present for the prize distribution ceremony. Over Rs 3.5 lakh was presented in prize money. A total of 1776 players from all 12 talukas took part in the 8th Tribal Sports Festival.
Following are the results: Tiswadi men, Canacona women emerged Volleyball winners while Quepem men, Mormugoa women were runners-up; Quepem men, Sanguem women won the Kabaddi contest and Tiswadi men, Quepem women were runners-up; Quepem men, Quepem women clinched the Kho-Kho title while runners-up were Salcete men, Canacona women.
Tiswadi men, Bicholim women were Tennis ball cricket champions whereas Canacona men, Ponda women were runners-up; Mormugoa won Langdi and Bardez finished second; Bicholim won the Lagori competition with Sanguem emerging as runners-up and Canacona were the winners of Tug-of-war while Tiswadi were runners-up.

VOLLEYBALL: Best Smasher: Nitin Sawant (Tiswadi), Siddhi Gaonkar (Canacona); Best Lifter: Devidas Gauns (Tiswadi), Ravina Gaonkar (Canacona); Best Promising Player: Dipesh Velip (Quepem), Saili Velip (Canacona).
KABADDI: Best Raider: Devidas Velip (Quepem), Anjali Gaonkar (Sanguem); Best Catcher: Harish Jalmi (Tiswadi), Manjusha Ghadi (Sanguem); Best Promising Player: Ashish Velip (Quepem), Divya Velip (Quepem).
TENNIS BALL CRICKET: Best Bowler: Suraj Velip (Canacona), Ankita Jalmi (Ponda); Best Batsman: Sagar Gaude (Tiswadi), Poorva Gaude (Bicholim); Best Promising Player: Rajesh Kankonkar (Tiswadi), Tanisha Velip (Canacona).
KHO-KHO: Best Chaser: Sanket Velip (Quepem), Ashvita Velip (Quepem); Best All-rounder: Alex Dias (Salcete), Pallavi Velip (Canacona); Best Promising Player: Deepak Gaonkar (Quepem), Ashwini Velip (Quepem).
LANGDI: Best Promising Players: Dhruv Gawda (Bardez), Vicky Velip (Mormugoa).
LAGORI: Best Promising Player: Mahadev Solayekar (Bicholim).

BPS tennis tournament: Pankaj, Anurag, Nehal advance to next round

MARGAOPankaj Naik advanced to the next round of the men’s singles category in the ongoing BPS All-Goa State Ranking Tennis Tournament at Margao on Tuesday. Naik overcame Rajesh Bundela (6-0), while Anurag Agrawal defeated Sandesh Satardekar (6-1) and Nehal Shaikh beat Anup Sardesai (6-2) in the men’s singles event.
