The 3rd edition of Late Venkatesh and Sumathi Shanbhag All India open rapid rating chess Tournament 2024 commenced on Saturday at the St. Threses High School, Mangor Hill, Vasco. The tournament attracted a massive participation of 350 players from all over India out of which 101 are internationally rated.
Goa's child prodigy IM Vaz Ethan is the top seed of the tournament and last year's winner IM Amey Audi is the second seed, IM Ritviz Parab is the third seed and IM Sameer Kathmale of Maharashtra is the fourth seed of the tournament.
The tournament is being organised by the Mormugao Taluka Chess Association under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation and is sponsored by Sukant Shanbhag in the fond memory of his parents. There were four rounds held on Saturday and the next five rounds will be played on Sunday and the prize distribution will be held at 6:00 pm. There are enormous awards for players in the main list and different age group categories with a unique rolling trophy for the winner.
Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Chief guest Sukant Shanbhag, Kishor Bandekar(President MTCA), Mukund Kambli( Secretary MTCA), Sanjay Kavlekar(Chief arbiter) and other members were also present.
