Bandoi Boys clinch maiden Santa Cruz Club Trophy

MARGAO

Bandoi Boys emerged victorious over ITS in a penalty shootout after a dramatic comeback by ITS in the second half in a thrilling final of the inaugural Santa Cruz Club Trophy 2024, held at the Fr. Druston and Wellington ground in Cavelossim . Bandoi Boys won 2-0 in the shootout, securing their maiden title in the competition organized by the Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with both teams having their chances but failing to find the back of the net. The half ended goalless, setting the stage for an exciting second period.

The second half began with a burst of action as the Rodrigues brothers, Charles and Alex, combined well in attack for Bandoi Boys. However, ITS' defense, led by the resolute Mevan Gracias, kept them at bay. In the 55th minute, Charles swung in a curling corner, and his brother Alex rose above the defense to head the ball past ITS goalkeeper Rajesh Jamaldini, giving Bandoi Boys a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, Charles scored again”this time with a stunning individual effort. He received a pass from Mapher outside the box, controlled the ball with his left foot, turned sharply, and fired a low, powerful shot that beat Jamaldini, making it 2-0 for Bandoi Boys.

But ITS refused to give up. Mevan Gracias, who had been excellent in defense, pushed forward and scored two quick goals to bring ITS level and force the match into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Bandoi Boys' goalkeeper Rajesh Jamaldini and star player Alex Rodrigues held their nerve. Rodrigues scored one of the penalties, and Jamaldini blocked attempts from ITS' Mevan Gracias and Dylan Lobo.

The event was graced by Joseph Pimenta, Zilla Panchayat Member of Benaulim Constituency, as the Chief Guest, along with Rinku Lobo, Dy. Sarpanch of VP Cavelossim, as the Special Invitee.
