Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) coach Lester Gurjao has a rare feat of being part of a double joy within a span of hours, a thing which a trainer of a team rarely gets to experience on a single day as both his teams he is coaching won their respective matches in the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs in the Nehru Hockey U17 boys.
Fr. Agnel High School Pilar and Fr. Agnel Higher Secondary School Pilar both registered emphatic wins to advance into the second round.
On Wednesday, at Hockey Stadium, Peddem-Mapusa, the Pilar trounced Holy Cross HS Bastora, 4-0 while the Pilar Higher Secondary School got the better of another Higher Secondary School Rosary Navelim, 5-0.
In the other match, Honda High School Honda edged The Kings School SJA 1-0. Saheed Khan scored the match winner in the second quarter of the match.
In the Fr. Agnel High School Pilar and Holy Cross HS Bastora clash, the match turned into a keenly contested tie with the Pilar school scoring the first goal with a minute left for the first half and then had to wait till the 52nd minute to add a second one.
The winners took the lead with a field goal from Ismail, 1-0 and the second goal came with Aman getting his name on the scorers list and adding a second one in the 57th minute, both field goals.
With a minute left, Rohit put the issue beyond doubt for the Pilar school.
In the Fr. Agnel Higher Secondary School Pilar and Rosary Higher Secondary School Navelim, the Pilar HSS took the lead in the 10th minute with Lidit Baa scoring his first of the three goals. He added two more goals in the 37th and 43rd minute to give the winners a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Yash Pawaskar added two more goals in the 51st and 56th minute to fashion a comfortable win for the Pilar HSS.
In today’s matches, St. Joseph HS Calangute meet Holy Cross HS Siolim at 10.45am, followed by Our Lady of Lourdes HS Utorda and Janata HS Mapusa at 2.30pm, with Infant Jesus HS Colva and DM's PVS Kushe HSS Assagao, meeting at 3.30pm in the last and concluding match of the day.
Seventeen teams including four Higher Secondary Schools are taking part in the tournament.
