Goa men’s handball team go down fighting to Chhattisgarh

Margao

Goa handball men’s team bowed out of the National Games after losing narrowly 24-30 to Chhattisgarh in a winner-takes-it-all match at the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium in Navelim on Monday

The hosts team coached by Vinay Sambari, which has a mixture of home-grown talent and some recruits from other states, gave a good account of themselves in the first half, keeping the difference of goals to just one or two.

Chhattisgarh, however broke free with a flurry of goals at the start of the second half which in the end prove to be Goa’s undoing.

The local side fought every bit to reduce the margin in the second half but Chhattisgarh were equal to the task and scored goals at regular intervals to take their team into the semifinal, both which will be played on Tuesday.

Earlier on Saturday, Goa had lost to Services 40-28 but bounced on Sunday to defeat Madhya Pradesh 37-32.

The girls team also crashed out of the championship as they failed to qualify from the four-team group.
