Goa’s Junior Girls Football team, despite some standout performances, faced significant challenges in the Tier 1 Junior Girls Football Championship, which ultimately undermined their campaign.
After a strong showing in the qualifying round, where they finished second in their group, expectations were high. However, the presence of teams like Manipur, Haryana, and West Bengal in their group made the competition tough.
The team's defence struggled in critical moments, leading to costly lapses in concentration and poor player-marking. Goa ended up conceding the second-most goals in the league, with 16. In three matches, they faced defeats after leading into the final twenty minutes. A key loss to Haryana came from defensive errors that cost them crucial points. In the game against Manipur, Goa conceded goals due to poor refereeing decisions and defensive lapses.
Head coach Jonathan Faleiro highlighted that Goa’s preparation time was limited to 28 days compared to other teams’ extensive preparation periods. He noted issues like player exhaustion due to the humid climate and requested a six-month preparation period to enhance team performance.
Despite these setbacks, Faleiro remains optimistic about the team’s potential. With improvements in defence and a continued focus on attacking play, the team is poised for future success.
