Guirdolim Sports Club secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 1st VJT Cup 20231 at Chinchinim Church Ground on Friday, after defeating CAC Sports and Social Club 2-1 in a hard-fought match.

Moises D’Sa scored a brace for Guirdolim, while Selwin Soares scored the consolation goal for CAC. After a goalless first half, the second half saw Guirdolim step up their game and take the lead in the 39th minute when Moises D’Sa scored with a clinical finish from inside the box. Seven minutes later, he doubled his tally and Guirdolim’s lead with another fine strike from close range.

CAC pulled one back in the 51st minute through Selwin Soares. However, they could not find the equaliser and Guirdolim held on to their lead till the final whistle. Selwin Soares was named the man-of-the-match for his efforts and was awarded a gift by Tiatrist Jesus Antao.

New English School celebrates Yoga Day
International Yoga Day was celebrated at New English School Mugli by Adapt Football Academy and AT Foundation. A total of 120 boys and girls participated in the programme which was conducted with great enthusiasm.

On the occasion, the importance of yoga was explained to the boys and girls by giving lessons on yoga by national-level yoga experts Akshata Bhaigade and Vaishnavi Yadav. Anju Turambekar, a former footballer, founder of the academy and foundation and who herself has made yoga an important part of her life, said the academy and foundation will conduct similar programmes to develop better footballers.

The head coach of the academy, Bhakti Pawar, coach Altamash Khan, Akanksha Malgi, Sonam Mahadik, Ashwini Turambekar and the principal of the school, R A Patil, sports teacher Prashant Mahajan and all the teaching staff gave valuable support.

State taekwondo championship begins at Navelim
The 29th Goa State Kyorugi & 9th Poomsae Taekwondo Championship 2023 organised by Taekwondo Association of Goa at Manohar Parrikar Stadium, Navelim was inaugurated on Friday.

Margao MLA and former chief minister Digambar Kamat inaugurated the three-day championship alongside Taekwondo Association of Goa president Navin Pai Raikar, secretary general Rajan Naik, association members, coaches, and talented athletes. Participants from various age groups and weight categories will partake in exhilarating Kyorugi (sparring) battles and awe-inspiring Poomsae (forms) performances.

"The championship is a testament to the dedication and passion of our taekwondo athletes," stated Kamat. "It is an honour to witness the remarkable skills on display and to support the growth of this exceptional sport in our State."
