A spectacular hat-trick from Marcus Leric Jr. Joseph powered Dempo Sports to a decisive 5-2 victory over Aizawl FC in a thrilling I-League match at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Monday.
Dempo's attacking prowess was evident from the outset. Pruthvesh Pednekar opened the scoring in the 16th minute, capitalizing on a well-orchestrated attack led by Christian Damian Perez Roa. Marcus Joseph then doubled the lead in the 26th minute, converting a cross from Christian Roa. However, an own goal by Dempo's Mohammed Ali in the 35th minute gave Aizawl FC a lifeline.
Dempo goalkeeper Ashish Sibi made crucial saves to deny Aizawl FC's Samuel, ensuring Dempo maintained their advantage. In the second half, Dempo dominated proceedings. Marcus Joseph scored his second goal in the 75th minute, assisted by Damian Roa, and Vinay Harji added another in the 78th. L Vanlalvunga pulled one back for Aizawl FC in the 90+1 minute, but Marcus Joseph sealed the victory with his hat-trick goal in the 90+6 minute.
This victory, Dempo's ninth in all competitions since the start of the year, brings their points tally to 25 from 20 games, placing them comfortably ahead of 11th-placed Aizawl FC (19 points). Dempo will now face Real Kashmir FC in a crucial home fixture on March 29th.
Dempo head coach Samir Naik expressed his satisfaction with his players' performance, emphasizing the importance of consistency. "The players performed admirably in terms of tactical discipline and adherence to instructions, which led us to an important victory," said Naik. "I’m proud of the players’ performance, and we have to know how important it is to win the two remaining matches. The three points were a step towards correcting the course, and we look forward to continuing in the same vein, especially in the next round against Real Kashmir FC."
Naik also acknowledged the support of Dempo's management, including Srinivas Dempo and Mrs. Pallavi Dempo, who were present at the stadium to cheer on the team. "Dempo boss Srinivas Dempo conveyed good wishes and urged the boys and team to work hard to achieve wins," Naik said. "I also praise Mrs Pallavi Dempo for her motivation and encouragement."
Dempo dominated the second half, holding 80% possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, demonstrating their quality and determination.
