Marina EM School, Verna won the one-day 5-a-side invitational inter-school football tournament for Boys at Don Bosco turf, Panaji recently. The tournament was organised by Don Bosco Past Pupils, Mormugao Unit and Don Boso Oratory, Panaji.
In the finals, Marina EM School beat Regina Martyrum High School 5-0 to claim the title and the winners' trophy for the 16-team event. St Jude HS, Betalbatim, St Micheal HS, Taleigao, Fr Agnel HS, Pilar, Regina Mundi HS, Chicalim, Fr Agnel HS, Pilar (Reds), Fr Agnel Multipurpose HS, Verna, St Britto HS, Mapusa, Our Lady of Grace HS, Bicholim, Don Bosco HS, Panaji, St Joseph HS, Calangute, Infant Jesus HS, Colva, St. Xavier's HS, Moira, OL of Lourdes HS, Utorda and Don Bosco HS (Blues), Panaji were the other teams.
The tournament commenced with an inaugural session where the organising secretary Luis Fernandes greeted the teams and guests and compered the function. Bro James Marcus, Director, Don Bosco Oratory, Panaji welcomed all present. Fr Avin Carvalho, Rector and Principal of Don Bosco Panaji, blessed all present and said a prayer. Marcus Mergulhao, the sports editor of Times of India, Goa edition, was the guest and kicked off the tournament. Awards: Up-and-coming player of the tournament - Leo Miranda of Regina Martyrum HS, Assolna; Best player and all-rounder of the tournament - Anish Kholkar, Don Bosco HS, Panaji; Highest scorer of the tournament - Shaunak Salgaonkar, St Joseph HS, Calangute; Best goalkeeper of the tournament - Melburn Silva, Regina Martyrum HS, Assolna; Fair play team of the tournament - St Xavier's HS, Moira.
The tournament was held on a league cum knock-out basis wherein the 16 teams were divided into four pools for the league matches and two teams from each pool qualified for the quarterfinals. St Joseph HS, Calangute, OL of Grace HS, Bicholim, Fr Agnel HS, Pilar, OL of Lourdes HS, Utorda, Marina EMS, Verna, St Francis Xavier HS, Moira, Don Bosco HS, Panaji, Regina Martyrum HS Assolna qualified for the quarterfinals.
