It was shocking to see the photograph of a tourist who climbed on the edge of the wall on the Lower Fort Aguada at Sinquerim risking her life just to have her picture clicked (TGE February 27). It is learnt that India holds the record for the number of people dying in the act of photographing themselves in dangerous positions. The situation has become so dire that the country has set up "no selfie" zones, 16 of them in the city of Mumbai alone. States are launching awareness campaigns and there’s even an app tracking dangerous spots. It is understood that when there is a 'like' or a positive comment on the post, there's a huge dopamine rush and that's a ‘feel-good’ hormone.. The police in Goa should act tough against those taking selfies from dangerous positions. It would be prudent for the tourism department to declare ‘No Selfie Zone’ at the various forts in the state. Climbing on the wall of the fort for taking photos needs to be strictly prohibited.
