Navelim Sporting advanced to the semifinals of the 2nd Bruno Leitao Memorial Cup 2024 after defeating Union of Chinchinim Villagers 4-1 in a highly anticipated match held at Chinchinim Church ground on Sunday.
Hosts Union of Chinchinim Villagers began the match with a strategy to score early, with Franky Olivero and Rowan Fernandes attempting to breach Navelim's defence. However, Navelim's defenders were resolute, denying any clear chances.
In the 24th minute, a direct kick from Navelim goalkeeper Jeet Gupta found the back of the Chinchinim net amidst a defensive mix-up, giving Navelim a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
After the break, Navelim Sporting shifted gears and quickly extended their lead. Prestly Gomes, Ronaldo Pereira, and Velington Almeida scored in the 41st, 45th, and 56th minutes respectively, propelling Navelim to a commanding 4-0 advantage.
Union of Chinchinim Villagers found a consolation goal through Senoy Olivero in the 50th minute, but it wasn't enough to alter the outcome.
Valinton D'Silva of Navelim Sporting was recognised as the Player of the Match for his exceptional performance, receiving the award from Adv Agnelo Furtado, President of Chinchinim Comunidade.
