Sao Jose de Areal scored a resounding 4-0 win over Carmona SC in the 32nd Super Soccer football tournament organised by United Boys of Dando Colva in memory of late Joao Francis Fernandes at Dando ground Benaulim on Thursday.

From the kickoff, Sao Jose de Areal showed great intensity, creating early chances and displaying their hunger for victory. They were successful when Mohd Mansoori opened the scoring with a deft placement. Samuel Costa struck the second goal in the sixth minute.

Carmona’s young side tried to get into the match with some nice play from Clestol and Advil but were never able to match the midfield duo of Marcus and Rayman Fernandes. Marcus and Allister scored in the 15th and 16th minutes respectively to take the game away from Carmona’s reach as the first half ended 4-0.

The second half was controlled by Sao Jose de Areal as they kept the ball in their control. Mohd Mansoori of Sao Jose de Areal was adjudged the man-of-the-match.

Earlier, the tournament was declared open by Anthony Leo Fernandes, GFA executive member, in the presence of Manoj Kesarkar, a football promoter from Benaulim and panch of Cana Benaulim, Andrew Ferrao, GFA executive member, Sanford Brahanza, Amilcar Pereira, and others.

Gaude lauds Goan bodybuilding troika
The executive committee of Goa Bodybuilding and Fitness Association and the bodybuilders who excelled in the recently held South Asian Bodybuilding and Sports Physique Championship 2023 in Maldives on Thursday met Sports Minister Govind Gaude.

Goan bodybuilders Gauresh Kinlekar, Vijay Sutar and Sumit Naik had performed well for India in the championship. Kinlekar and Vijay won bronze while Naik finished in fourth place.

According to the association, it is the first time in the history of Goan bodybuilding that Goan athletes won medals at the international level. Gaude congratulated the bodybuilders and wished them good luck for their future endeavours.

Rama-Nitin win beach volleyball trial finals
Goan beach volleyball doubles pair of Rama Dhawaskar and Nitin Sawant defeated Bharat and Robin of Pondicherry in the finals of a selection trial match organized by the ad-hoc committee of Indian Olympic Association.

The selection tourney was conducted to pick the Indian team to participate in the Asia Championship to be held in China. Goa Volleyball Association president Daniel Rodrigues and secretary Hugo Gonsalves congratulated the Goan pair.

Devotee Sporting move into semifinals
Devotee Sporting Club beat RBC Carvota 4-1 to move into the semifinals of the 23rd SWYAL Cup inter-ward football tournament at Loutoulim ground.

Shawn Noronha score a brace while Sudamshiv and Shelford Fernandes scored a goal each for Devotee. Anson Fernandes reduced the Margin For RBC Carvota. Shawn Noronha was awarded the man-of-the-match.

In another match, Upcoming Boys of Carvota blanked Vanxem Reunited 3-0. Nathan, Manalic and Myson scored a goal each for Carvota. Myson of Upcoming Boys was named the man-of-the-match.

St Anne's Festival tourney at Curti
Ponda Footballers in association with Sports Authority of Goa will organise the 33rd St Anne's Festival inter-village football tournament in the memory of late Maria Anatansia Fernandes from July 15 at Animal Husbandry ground, Curti Ponda, at 4.55 pm.

The teams taking part in the tournament are Sai Avtar Anjuna, Don Bosco Oratary Fatorda, Verna SC, Goan Warriors Tivim, Raia Sporting Club, Navelim Sporting, Sinquerim SC and hosts Ponda Footballers. Ex-footballer and son of late Maria Fernandes, Vincent Paul Fernandes will inaugurate the tournament ahead of the opener between Sai Avtar Anjuna and Don Bosco Oratary Fatorda.

The semifinals will be played on July 19 and 20 while the finals are slated for July 30, on the occasion of the feast of St Anne's. There will be an exhibition match before the finals between North Goa and South Goa veterans above 60 years of age.

Tennis-ball cricket team trials on July 17
Goa Tennis Ball Cricket Association will conduct selection trials to pick Goa boys and girls teams for the 31st Junior National Tennis Ball Cricket Championship for boys & girls to be held at Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir from September 25-28.

The first stage of the selection trials will be held on July 17 at Kavlem Panchayat ground, Kapileshwari, Kavlem at 3 pm. Interested players can report to Haresh Parsekar or Nilesh Naik with Aadhaar card, birth certificate and a complete playing kit.
