Lake-fed fields lift Curtorim harvest

PANAJI

Harvest results from Curtorim present a mixed picture this season.  According to agriculturist and farmer mentor Santan Rodrigues, paddy fields around the historic Curtorim lake have delivered a strong yield, which he attributed to the traditional lake irrigation system built and maintained over generations.

The situation is less encouraging in the upper morod lands, he said, where a rainfall deficit has affected crop performance and reduced yields.

The contrast highlights the importance of dependable water sources in sustaining agricultural output during uneven monsoon conditions.

Overall, gains from the lake-side fields may help offset losses elsewhere, but productivity remains below potential in rain-dependent areas.

Rodrigues noted that a similar trend is visible across Curtorim, with well-watered low-lying fields expected to perform significantly better than upland tracts impacted by inadequate rainfall.
