The Department of English at Fr Agnel College of Arts & Commerce, Pilar, inaugurated its student-centric movie club ‘CineWise’ on Monday.

The Club’s Faculty Coordinator Asst. Prof. Jisha Ponnachan welcomed the young cinephiles and introduced the team that worked behind the event, namely Asst. Prof. Maria Da Cruz and Asst. Prof. Anita Fernandes.

The event was graced by the Principal Fr Frederick Rodrigues and the chief guest Fr Allan Noronha.

In his address, Fr Allan Noronha expressed his delight at the active addition of clubs like 'CineWise' to the educational landscape. He emphasised the importance of such initiatives in providing students with a platform to discuss, appreciate, and learn from films.

He hoped that students take back not just memories but a profound appreciation for the art of filmmaking.

The event began with the unveiling of specially crafted tickets for the inaugural screening, symbolising the beginning of a cinematic journey for the students. The film selected for the premiere screening of the movie club was the 2023 hit film '12th Fail’ directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

This was followed by lively discussions among students where they shared their first impression and engaged in discussing various aspects of the film.

Tanisha Kundaikar, an SYBA student says, “I am sure this Movie Club would be our refuge - a cozy corner where films unfold, and bonds strengthen, one screening at a time.”

Sharing this thought, the club coordinator Asst. Prof. Jisha Ponnachan added: “Even in our darkest moments, a film can illuminate the path of hope by encouraging us to understand that our individual misery is actually a shared human experience.”

‘CineWise’ is a unique initiative to create an inclusive space for students to freely discuss films, fostering an enthusiastic community that is passionate about the art of cinema.

“It’s our endeavour through ‘CineWise’ to open a window into the magical world of movies and encourage creative and critical thinking skills,” said Asst. Prof. Maria Da Cruz, English Department In-Charge.

English faculty and NSS Coordinator Asst. Prof. Anita Fernandes also emphasised on the mission of the club saying, “it aims to enhance students’ cultural understanding through the medium of films”.

With the intention of both entertainment and education, the club aims to ignite a love for the art of filmmaking, encouraging students to explore the diverse facets of cinema.
