BMW M440i Convertible: Roof down, power up

THE GOAN I PANAJI

The BMW M440i Convertible is a car bought with the heart first and the calculator later. At Rs 1.09 crore, ex-showroom, it is not trying to be the most sensible luxury car in India. Instead, it offers something rarer: six-cylinder performance, everyday usability, four-seat convenience and the drama of a folding roof. It sits below the full-blown M cars, but as an M Performance model, it still feels seriously quick and special for buyers who want speed without going completely hardcore.

Exteriors

Visually, the M440i Convertible has the right amount of aggression. The long bonnet, low stance and wide body give it classic BMW coupé proportions, while the large kidney grille, slim LED headlamps and M detailing add attitude. With the roof down, it looks properly glamorous; with the fabric roof up, it still maintains a clean, coupé-like profile. The 19-inch M alloy wheels, frameless doors, sculpted bumpers and twin exhaust outlets help it stand apart from regular luxury cars. It is not as loud as an M4, which works in its favour. The M440i looks sporty, expensive and tasteful without trying too hard.

Interiors

The cabin feels focused around the driver, which is exactly what you expect from a sporty BMW. The seating position is low, the steering wheel feels chunky and the front seats offer good support for relaxed cruising and fast driving. Quality levels are strong, with premium materials, neat M touches and a layout that feels modern without becoming complicated. The front seats get electric adjustment and lumbar support, and the overall comfort is good for long drives. The rear seats are usable for short journeys, but this is still a two-door convertible, so taller adults will not find them very generous. The boot is practical enough for weekend luggage, though using it with the roof down naturally reduces flexibility.

Tech & Features

BMW’s curved display dominates the dashboard, combining a digital driver’s display with a large touchscreen infotainment unit. The system feels slick, sharp and responsive, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, connected features, wireless charging and a Harman Kardon audio system adding to the premium experience. The electric soft-top is the big party trick. It opens and closes quickly and can be operated at low speeds, which makes it useful in real-world driving. Safety equipment includes multiple airbags, ABS, stability control, traction control, parking sensors, camera assistance, lane departure warning, strong braking hardware and the added grip of xDrive all-wheel drive. However, at this price, ventilated seats and a more comprehensive ADAS package would make the equipment list feel even stronger for India.

Engine & Performance

The real star is the 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid assistance. It produces 374 hp and 500 Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Power goes to all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive system, helping the M440i put its performance down cleanly. BMW claims 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, and the car feels every bit that quick. The engine is smooth at low speeds, muscular in the mid-range and genuinely exciting when pushed. It never feels nervous or too aggressive, which is what makes it so enjoyable. In Comfort mode, it behaves like a refined grand tourer. Switch to Sport, and the gearbox sharpens, throttle response improves and the exhaust note becomes even more addictive.

Drive

On the move, the M440i Convertible feels more like a fast GT than a raw sports car. It has huge grip, good body control and strong braking performance, but it also maintains a level of comfort that makes it easy to live with. The steering is quick and accurate, though enthusiasts may want a little more feel. The adaptive setup keeps the ride mature, even when the roads are not perfect. With the roof down, the experience becomes far more emotional. You hear the engine better, feel more connected to the surroundings and suddenly even an ordinary road feels special. That is the real charm of this car.

Competition

The most direct rival is the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet. The Mercedes leans more towards elegance and comfort, while the BMW feels sportier and more performance-focused. Buyers could also consider luxury saloons or coupés around this price, but very few offer this blend of open-top theatre, six-cylinder performance and all-wheel-drive confidence.

Verdict

The BMW M440i Convertible is not flawless. Rear-seat space is limited, some features are missing and it is clearly an indulgent purchase. But judged as an experience, it delivers beautifully. It has the looks, the performance, the sound, the luxury and the roof-down drama to make every drive feel like an occasion. For buyers who want something more emotional than a saloon and more usable than a dedicated sports car, the M440i Convertible makes a very strong case. It is fast, stylish, premium and properly memorable.
