All new Toyota HILUX: Still tough, now more desirable

All new Toyota HILUX: Still tough, now more desirable

T he Toyota Hilux has never tried to be an SUV wearing a pickup’s clothes. It is, at heart, a workhorse with an adventurous streak, and the ninth-generation model continues that philosophy while addressing one of its biggest weaknesses: everyday modernity. Launched in India at Rs 31.99 lakh, the 2026 Hilux gets a dramatic design, a more contemporary cabin and more equipment, while retaining the proven 2.8-litre diesel, ladder-frame construction and serious 4x4 hardware. The result is a pickup that feels more desirable without abandoning what made the Hilux a global icon.

Exteriors

The new Hilux has a much more imposing road presence. Its upright nose, broad grille and sculpted bonnet give it a muscular stance, while slim LED headlamps and distinctive daytime running lights add a modern touch. Toyota describes the design theme as “Cyber Sumo”, inspired by the powerful posture of a sumo wrestler. The redesigned bumper, piano-black detailing, LED fog lamps, new alloy wheels and prominent wheel arches reinforce its rugged character. At the rear, LED combination lamps, a chunky bumper with a step and large Toyota lettering on the tailgate make the pickup instantly recognisable. The silhouette remains familiar, but the details make this Hilux look considerably more contemporary.

Interiors

Inside is where the transformation is most obvious. The cabin retains the tough, upright architecture expected of a Hilux, but the materials, ergonomics and presentation are noticeably more premium. Soft-touch surfaces and metallic accents give it a more expensive feel. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, while the rear gets a 60:40 split-fold arrangement. However, rear-seat space remains more suited to shorter journeys than extended family touring. The driving position is commanding, with tilt-and-telescopic steering adding useful adjustability.

Tech & Features

Technology finally catches up with the Hilux’s image. A 12.3-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Toyota’s i-Connect connected-car functionality. It also gets voice recognition, steering controls, an eight-speaker audio system and wireless charging. Convenience equipment includes smart entry and push-button start, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, PM2.5 air filtration, multiple drive modes and parking assistance. A panoramic view monitor improves visibility, while physical controls remain useful off-road.

Engine & Specs

Power comes from the familiar 2.8-litre BS6 Phase 2 turbo-diesel, producing 204PS and 500Nm. It is paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission in India. The biggest change is the addition of a 4x2 version, offering the lifestyle-pickup experience without full off-road hardware. The 4x4 versions retain Toyota’s proven system with H4 and L4 ranges. The 80-litre fuel tank is useful for long-distance travel. The suspension uses double wishbones at the front and leaf springs at the rear.

Drive, Handling, Off-Road

On the road, the Hilux feels substantial rather than sporty. The 2.8-litre diesel delivers strong, effortless torque, and the six-speed automatic makes progress smooth in traffic and on highways. Its seating position and visibility inspire confidence, although the heavy steering and firm, slightly bouncy ride remind you that this is still a ladder-frame pickup. Move off the tarmac and the Hilux comes into its own. The 4x4 system, low-range gearing, electronic differential lock and Downhill Assist Control give it the hardware needed for serious terrain. Its ground clearance, approach and departure angles, and 600mm water-wading capability make it comfortable tackling rocks, mud and steep trails. It is a genuine off-road machine that remains civilised enough for daily use.

Safety

Safety equipment includes seven airbags, Vehicle Stability Control, ABS with Brake Assist, Emergency Brake Signal, ISOFIX mounts, front and rear parking sensors and tyre-pressure monitoring. The Global Outstanding Assessment body structure adds occupant protection. Importantly, the India-spec model does not get the full ADAS suite offered in some international markets, so buyers should not assume it has the latest driver-assistance package.

Competition

The Hilux continues to face the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross, its most direct lifestyle-pickup rival. The Toyota costs more, but counters with stronger technology, durability credentials and a more sophisticated presentation. Buyers considering SUVs such as the Fortuner or MG Gloster may also look at it, although the Hilux offers an open cargo bed instead of an enclosed boot and third-row seating.

Verdict

Priced from Rs 31.99 lakh for the GX 4x2 AT, rising to Rs 33.69 lakh for the GX 4x4 AT and Rs 36.69 lakh for the VX 4x4 AT, the new Hilux is not cheap. Yet Toyota has made it more complete without diluting its core character. It remains large, rugged and somewhat old-school to drive, but now brings the technology and premium feel expected at this price. For buyers wanting a genuinely capable lifestyle pickup rather than an SUV with cosmetic toughness, the 2026 Hilux remains the benchmark for those seeking something genuinely different from SUVs.
