One for the wild, one for the wired as Mahindra charts two futures

From rugged pick-up adventure to AI-powered electric mobility, Mahindra is charting two very different futures. The Goan takes a closer look at both vehicles

From a global lifestyle pick-up built on the Scorpio legacy to an electric SUV centred on AI, gaming and connected technology, Mahindra’s August unveilings highlight the breadth of the company’s automotive ambitions.

Mahindra used the Independence Day weekend to showcase two products that could hardly be more different, yet together offer a clear picture of where the Indian carmaker is heading.

On August 14, it unveiled the production version of its much-anticipated global pick-up, named the Scorpio Lifestyler for India. A day later came the BE 6 SPORTEQ, a technology-focused version of its electric SUV.

One is built around a ladder frame, a load bed and the promise of adventure beyond the road. The other brings screens, artificial intelligence, gaming and connected experiences into the car.

A Scorpio for global markets

The Scorpio Lifestyler could be the more important of the two for Mahindra’s global ambitions.

Its story began with the Global Pik Up concept shown in Cape Town in 2023. The production vehicle unveiled this month, however, is much closer to a model that customers will eventually be able to buy.

Mahindra says it was designed at its India Design Studio in Mumbai and developed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai. The vehicle is intended for both Indian and international markets.

The Lifestyler is based on Mahindra’s next-generation body-on-frame architecture. Although it shares its basic DNA with the Scorpio N, it is not simply an SUV converted into a pick-up.

It has been developed as a dedicated lifestyle pick-up, with a longer body, double-cab layout and a large load bed.

Built for different lifestyles

Mahindra has also worked to give the pick-up its own identity.

The upright front, wide grille, distinctive LED lights and muscular body retain the toughness associated with the Scorpio name. The three themes shown — Trail, Reef and Valley — demonstrate how the vehicle can be adapted to different lifestyles and environments.

Design has played an important role in the project. The Global Pik Up was developed under Mahindra’s global design organisation led by Pratap Bose, the company’s Chief Design and Creative Officer.

The Lifestyler is therefore more than just a new Scorpio body style. It represents Mahindra’s attempt to take an Indian automotive identity into markets where lifestyle pick-ups are already popular.

Engines and off-road ability

Mahindra has not yet announced the final powertrain options for India. However, its connection with the Scorpio N offers an indication of what could be available.

Expected options include the Scorpio N’s 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine, producing around 203 hp, and the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, producing around 175 hp.

The Scorpio N offers six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, along with four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is also expected to be a key part of the Lifestyler package, given its adventure-focused positioning.

Terrain modes and off-road equipment could further strengthen its appeal as a capable global pick-up.

Mahindra plans to bring the Scorpio Lifestyler to India by April 2027. Its starting price is expected to remain below Rs 19.79 lakh, ex-showroom, placing it against models such as the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max V-Cross.

A very different future

Then came August 15 and a completely different expression of Mahindra’s future.

The BE 6 SPORTEQ turns the electric SUV’s cabin into a technology showcase. The biggest change is a new coast-to-coast triple-screen layout, including a dedicated display for the front passenger.

The dashboard has also been redesigned to create a more open cabin. Among the key additions is TEQ_Talk, a conversational AI assistant powered by Google Gemini technology. Mahindra says it can interact with more than 200 vehicle functions, including navigation, climate control, entertainment and vehicle information.

The SPORTEQ also adds gaming, karaoke, Dolby-supported audio, Drift Mode, Acceleration Boost and a digital key that can work across multiple devices.

BE 6 SPORTEQ puts tech centre stage

The SPORTEQ’s biggest changes are technological rather than mechanical.

It continues with the BE 6’s existing battery options of 59 kWh and 79 kWh. The larger battery offers a claimed range of up to 683 km.

The new edition is therefore less about changing the way the BE 6 drives and more about changing how people experience the vehicle.

Mahindra has also expanded the BE 6 range with special versions, including the Launch Edition and Formula E Freedom Edition.

The SPORTEQ is priced from Rs 19.45 lakh for outright purchase. Under the Battery-as-a-Service model, the initial price falls to Rs 11.45 lakh, with battery usage charged separately. Deliveries are scheduled to begin on August 26.

Two ideas of freedom

Together, the two unveilings tell a larger story.

The Scorpio Lifestyler looks outward — towards global markets, adventure and physical capability. The BE 6 SPORTEQ looks towards software, artificial intelligence and the digital experiences becoming an increasingly important part of modern motoring.

One is about leaving the city behind. The other is about turning the car into a connected digital space.

Perhaps that is the clearest message from Mahindra’s Independence Day showcase: the company is no longer trying to define the future of mobility through a single formula. It is building vehicles for very different ideas of freedom — one with a load bed, four-wheel drive and a trail ahead, and another with an electric powertrain, three screens and an AI assistant ready to respond.
