Honda Cars India has expanded its premium portfolio with the launch of the all-new ZR-V e:HEV, priced at Rs 47.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) from Japan, the ZR-V sits above the City and Elevate to become the brand’s flagship offering in India. Rather than chasing outright size or off-road credentials, Honda has focused on refinement, efficiency and everyday usability. The ZR-V enters a niche but growing premium SUV segment where buyers expect luxury, advanced technology and electrified performance. With its strong hybrid powertrain and a generous list of comfort and safety features, Honda is targeting customers who prioritise a smooth driving experience over outright performance. We drove it around the Buddh Race Track in Delhi for our review.
Exteriors
The ZR-V follows Honda’s latest global design language with a clean, elegant and understated appearance. The front fascia features a large gloss-black grille flanked by sleek LED projector headlamps with integrated daytime running lights. A sculpted bonnet, sharp character lines and neatly integrated wheel arches lend the SUV a sporty stance without appearing overly aggressive. The side profile is highlighted by 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, body-coloured cladding and chrome window surrounds, while the rear receives slim LED tail lamps connected visually by a black trim panel. Unlike many rivals that rely on excessive chrome and bold styling, the ZR-V adopts a mature design that is likely to age gracefully. Its proportions strike a fine balance between a family SUV and a premium crossover.
Interiors
Step inside and the cabin reflects Honda’s emphasis on quality and ergonomics. Soft-touch materials, leather upholstery and a neatly layered dashboard create an upmarket ambience. The front seats offer excellent comfort and support for long journeys, while the rear bench provides generous legroom and adequate headroom for three passengers. Storage spaces have been thoughtfully incorporated throughout the cabin, enhancing practicality. The dashboard layout is clean and intuitive, with physical controls retained for key functions, making everyday operation simple. Visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent and the overall fit and finish feels solid. The panoramic sunroof further enhances the sense of space inside the cabin, while dual-zone climate control ensures greater comfort for occupants.
Tech and Safety
The Honda ZR-V comes loaded with features, including a large touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, wireless charging and powered front seats. It also gets the Honda SENSING ADAS suite, eight airbags, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring and other advanced safety features.
Engine & Specifications
Powering the ZR-V is Honda’s familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with two electric motors under the company’s e:HEV strong hybrid system. The combined output stands at 184 PS with 315 Nm of torque, channelled to the front wheels through an e-CVT automatic transmission. Honda claims a fuel efficiency of 22.8 kmpl, making it one of the most efficient premium petrol SUVs currently on sale. The hybrid system intelligently switches between EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive depending on driving conditions, ensuring an optimal balance between performance and efficiency.
Drive
The Honda ZR-V delivers a refined driving experience with a claimed fuel economy of 22.80 kmpl. Its strong hybrid system offers smooth acceleration, while the e-CVT prioritises comfort. The SUV provides a comfortable ride, stable handling and confident highway performance, making it well suited for daily commuting and long-distance journeys.
Competition
The ZR-V competes against premium SUVs such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Kodiaq and Nissan X-Trail. While the European rivals offer all-wheel-drive options and larger dimensions, Honda counters with its proven strong hybrid technology, excellent fuel efficiency, refined driving manners and a comprehensive ADAS package. Buyers looking for low running costs without compromising on premium features may find the ZR-V an attractive proposition.
Pricing
Honda has priced the ZR-V e:HEV at an introductory Rs 47.99 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it at the premium end of the segment. Being a CBU import naturally attracts a higher price tag, but Honda is banking on the SUV’s hybrid technology, Japanese build quality and extensive equipment list to justify the premium.
Verdict
The Honda ZR-V is not an SUV designed to grab attention through flashy styling or overwhelming power. Instead, it excels in areas that matter most during daily ownership—refinement, comfort, efficiency and reliability. Its premium cabin, sophisticated hybrid powertrain, comprehensive safety package and effortless driving manners make it a compelling choice for buyers seeking a comfortable luxury SUV with low running costs. While the CBU pricing limits its appeal to a niche audience, the ZR-V successfully showcases Honda’s engineering strengths and stands out as one of the most refined hybrid SUVs currently available in the Indian market.
