The Zilla Parishad works of laying pavers outside Our Ladyof Martyrs Church in Assolna came under suspicion when a ZP advertisement in alocal daily invited tenders. But in reality, the works are already completed byover 50%. When questioned, the ZillaParishad chairperson Nelly Rodrigues pointed out that this confusion occursoften when the local MLA refuses to work with the ZP body and the work isdoubled tendered by the PWD and ZP.
Rodrigues clarified that she has heard of this incident for thefirst time, where work is in progress and tenders are invited at the same time.“But these allegations cannot be trusted. We can take action only if anofficial complaint is made. In case the works are tendered twice, the latterauthority cancels the respective tender.” Clarifying the entire confusion, ZPmember of Assolna- Velim-Cuncolim Anthony Rodrigues pointed that ZPs areallowed to carry out work up to Rs 5 lakhs only. “Incase a project is of ahigher value, then the project is done in two or three phases,” he claimed
Anthony asserted that the Assolna pavers job is worth Rs 8lakhs and as such is being tendered and done in 2 phases. A reason why the workis being tendered despite being 50% complete. This means that phase one iscomplete, worth Rs 5 lakh, while the rest of the works is in progress.
