Getting deceived in life is a phenomenon existing since time immemorial. The Bible has uncountable examples of this. Even Jesus was denied and sold by His own disciples. Yet the search for trustworthiness is always on and in the bargain of this search when hit on the face with deception life loses its charm of living. The zeal and desire to seek justice for the deceived bring us under the realm of doubt and when bugged under the weight of doubt and with the finger of suspicion pointing towards the own blood, can life be the same for the deceived and the deceiver? Prince Jacob makes his audience question their own intuition in his saga of ‘whodunit’ as he tracks the real culprit behind the crime; the criminal whom we all know exists but never realize who he is!
Script
The script is a thriller, a suspense till the end. This is a perfect tiatr script which the Goa Tiatr Academy should promote as an ideal for young and old tiatrists to follow. The comedy is part of the main story line with the charactors being integral to the story. there are ‘cantos’ in abundance giving it a feel of the tiatr of the old. Every new ‘pordo’ takes the tiatr to a different level with the happenings from the previous scene spelling out something different in the ongoing new scene keeping a perfect balance between the previous and present pordo.
Comedy
The comedy gives the tiatr a feel of an old classic. Here, Prince Jacob leads by example. There are serious scenes going on yet how he allows the trans
fer of emotions from seriousness to comedy is an act from the domain of the masters and Prince Jacob is truly one. The comedy is part of every pordo besides there is comedy in two side acts too which again is part of the tiatr characterization. The comedy is simple and decent and laughter guaranteed.
Sets
The sets are beautiful. Over the past year and half that this review team of The Goan daily is watching tiatrs. Here, we have seen for the first time sets tailor-made specifically for this tiatr. The sets had special seaters too though the quality could have been better. Nevertheless it’s a good step to see furniture on the sets. The artistes too have put the furniture to good use with dialogues being delivered sitting on the seaters. This is indeed a great leap in tiatr. How the appearance of the sets are changed by shifting a few box files and creating a new locale too is interesting to watch.
Acting : Prince Jacob gets the best out of his cast making them function as a team rather than a bunch of individual actors. Each actor has a character of substance and are seen putting in their best feet forward. Lourdes and Michael play the perfect couple. While Lourdes is convincing in being suspicious of everyone and everything, Michael is very natural and instinctive playing the perfect victim of their suspicions.Veteran Jacinto as the taxi driver gives them perfect support. Sharon as the daughter is impressive. Jonathan is aggressive and convincing but his stage movements get too robotic at times.Valency the heart throbbing youngster has no dialogues to deliver but it is her characterization and portrayal of the role that has taken the tiatr to a different level. She can definitely be crowned as the Best female Actor of the year 2019! Prince Jacob has finally found his original form and is seen at his best. (Watch him doing the character of a Dubai girl Camlin) Sanita is natural in her acts. She has a bright future ahead if she continues acting with the Master. Agnel de Dabolim is the pick of this tiatr in the comedy section. His timings and mannerisms reminds of the springman comedian Anthony Mendes of old. Cedric was the only disappointment. He had great laughter punch lines but he reduced them to just smiles.
Music/songs:
The band is impressive. Seby Moraes and his boys have worked out well. Distributing solo parts to his band members independently pays good returns. The saxophone solo and the drums solo too is very impressive. Rohan Patrick gives a great background score that enhances the performance of the actors.
The opening is sung in style by Valency D’Souza and the Biblical scenes depicted therein as in olden tiatrs are splendid. There are beautiful solos by Lourdes, the new singing craze George Gonsalves and Agnel de Dabolim. There is a duet by Agnel and Sharon, Duos by Prince Jacob and Cedric and by Lourdes and Sharon, a trio by Prince Jacob, Sanita and Cedric a quartet by Jonathan, Prnce Jacob, cedric and Sanita. The political trio is well composed but the overpraising of one politician in the end raises eyebrows. But the tiatr features a good singing side.
Direction:
This is a tiatr that can see the hand of the Director. A presentation that has aimed at perfection in all spheres. The director has managed to get the best out from his entire team and that augurs well for the tiatr performance. The tiatr is a good performance to watch. A good entertainment; ‘divertiment’as it is called, is guaranteed.
