The Union of Navelim (UK) celebrated its Ruby Anniversary with a Dinner and Dance at the opulent Grand Sapphire Hotel & Banqueting, Croydon on April 15 from 5 pm to 1 am, to commemorate 40 years of its existence.

Although the celebration could not take place in 2020 due to the pandemic, the event was organised on April 15 by the committee led by its president, Sandra Fernandes-Allen, to cater to all ages.

Navelkars and guests from diverse backgrounds came together to support the event. Many friends reunited after long and danced away to the sounds of Rainbows End, DJ DnA, and DJ Backspin. Special performances were held by instrumentalist Mackvin Dias (Canada), tribute band ‘Abba Dream’ and Bachata Dancers EBB & Flow Sutton. Chris Da Cruz was the co-MC for the night and ensured the event ran smoothly.

In her welcome speech, Sandra mentioned that the Dinner and Dance was dedicated to one of the key committee members, late Amelia Gomes, who was instrumental to the union’s success.

“Amelia always had a passion for the Union in that she always wanted to uphold the name, be it for good dances, food, and good entertainment with the wow factor,” said Sandra.

The longest-serving members, Henrietta Mascarenhas and Loy Rebello, were in attendance and were ‘overwhelmed with pride’ at such a spectacular event.

An intricate celebratory cake was created by Lourdes Da Cruz and her team and Sandra invited all the ex-presidents in attendance to join her in the cake-cutting ceremony.

In his speech, Loy Rebello expressed his appreciation to Sandra, Charlotte Fernandes (Secretary) and Antonetta Fernandes (Social Secretary) for all their hard work and efforts, and presented them all with a token of appreciation.

Indian food was catered for by Spice Village, with CosCon Bar Services providing the service. Photography at the event was provided by Gad Studios.

A raffle was held with over 15 prizes being generously donated. The first prize, won by Natalie Fernandes, was a return ticket for two to Lisbon (Portugal) to the value of £350. Throughout the night, various spot prizes were awarded too.

“We received many positive accolades from guests, on the choice of venue, great music, splendid choice in delicious food, excellent bar service, the ‘worth-winning’ prizes and the ‘young crowd spirit thoroughly entertained’,” said Union of Navelim (UK) Secretary Charlotte Fernandes.“Several people mentioned that they have never seen a Goan function of high standard and were already looking forward to the next,” Charlotte added.“The event set a great expectation for future events, realising the young talent, and how the ideas and contributions, of these like-minded individuals, have helped to evolve the Union. This will no doubt and most importantly keep the legacy of the Navelkars ancestral roots going.“It was clear, the hours of hard work, drive, dedication and passion that were put in, to ensure it was a ‘grand event’ for all guests. An event to remember for a long time and ‘the beginning of something big and profound’,” was a compliment received.
