The Goa State Pollution Control Board has decided to regulate and design a safe system of utilisation of treated wastewater for the sub-surface irrigation of garden plants. The board in its recently held meeting has given post-facto approval to the already appointed expert committee to study the existing STP treated water utilisation system for its pro and cons.
This committee will study the existing system and suggest improvements. The committee will also suggest the precautions and assist the board to decide guidelines to scientifically execute, use and maintain proposed systems with aim of finally bringing in within the legal framework for implementation.
Due to the rise of multi-dwellings in the State, especially in the areas with high water table the traditional method of soak pits for sewerage water disposal does not work. The problem gets aggravated during monsoon time due to the overflowing of sewerage water and the problem of groundwater pollution occurs.
Many times the soak pits fail due to impervious rock strata, high water table near coastal regions, improper design and maintenance, etc. The water leakage from soak pits many times causes groundwater pollution.
